BJP ends Mamata Banerjee’s 15-year rule in West Bengal with a decisive victory. Explore key factors, opposition setbacks, and national political implications

The BJP has decisively outmaneuvered the combative Mamata Banerjee with characteristic ruthlessness, bringing her 15-year rule in West Bengal to an end. The saffron party has not only penetrated a regional stronghold with a significant victory over the Trinamool Congress but has also shaken the already fragile Opposition. Employing every tool in its extensive arsenal, the BJP made substantial investments in building its cadre and reaching out to rural communities, while its senior leaders — particularly PM Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah — made concerted efforts to convince voters that the state urgently required poriborton (change). Mamata’s campaign primarily focused on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, which resulted in the removal of approximately 90 lakh names. This chaotic and contentious process, which she characterized as a strategy by the Centre to diminish her voter base, had a significant impact on the election results. Additionally, Mamata’s decision to operate independently, without alliances with the Congress and Left parties, also benefited the BJP.
The electoral outcome in Bengal represents a significant achievement for the saffron party, despite its ongoing challenges in expanding its presence in South India. The BJP secured three Assembly seats in Kerala (having previously won none in the 2021 elections) and just one in Tamil Nadu. Nevertheless, the party would be satisfied to see the departure of DMK leader and outgoing Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin, who has been in conflict with the Centre for the past five years. Anti-incumbency was a crucial factor in Bengal, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu, yet the BJP successfully overcame this challenge in Assam to maintain its governance.
The Congress-led United Democratic Front’s success in Kerala has provided the grand old party with a reason to celebrate, even as it has faced another defeat in Bengal. However, the setbacks experienced by Stalin and Mamata suggest that the Congress will continue to lead the Opposition’s delicate INDIA bloc. For the BJP, the next target is undoubtedly Punjab, where it is actively working to make significant inroads into the ranks of the Congress and AAP.
