Mumbai Dabbawalas

Mumbai Dabbawalas, who are famous all over the world for delivering hot lunches from homes to people at work, visited Imperial College, Bargarh. The Dabbawalas shared their secret of delivering 2,00,000 dabbas on time.

On behalf of the Dabbawala team, Ritesh Andre and Sunil Shinde delivered management lessons to the students. The college campus was designed like that of Mumbai. The students in traditional Maharashtrian attire welcomed the guests. Deepak Goyal, the director of the institution co-ordinated the event. In the beginning of the event, Manoranjan Sahu and Jaya Prakash Satapathy felicitated the speakers. Dr. D. K. Mahalik, HOD, Department of Business Administration, Sambalpur University was also present on the occasion. The speakers were greeted with cauliflowers instead of bouquets.

After the session, the guests and students enjoyed Mumbai’s famous cutting chai and Vada Pav.

The Dabbawalas are the lifeline of Mumbai. As the city grew, the demand for tiffin delivery also grew. The whole system depends on symbols, signs, and colours for organisation. Initially, it was simple color coding, but, now, the coding has evolved into alphanumeric characters. The Dabbawalas rarely go wrong or reach late. A single Dabba goes through six dabbawalas before it reaches the consumer.

Dabbawalas have become one of the world’s best food systems. Many business management schools teach their case study as a part of their curriculum
