The cause of death may be closed pyometra leading to acute pyemia

The 7 – year old female leopard (named Rani) of Sambalpur Zoo passed away on 4th December, 2024 night at around 9.13 PM while it was undergoing treatment for infection in Uterus. On 4th December it was active full day, its treatment started at 6 PM while vomiting was observed by veterinarian followed by discharge of pus from reproductive organs.
Accordingly, three injections – antibiotics & anti-inflammatory were given to the leopard. Subsequently at night respiratory distress and bleeding from mouth occurred before the animal passed away. The cause of death may be closed Pyometra leading to acute Pyemia (infection in uterus affecting other organs of body). Determination of pregnancy status (tests) of female leopard was scheduled to be done during third week of December 2024 (minimum 45 days post mating) said Hirakud wildlife DFO Anshu Pragyan Das.
During November 2023 one 8 – year old male leopard (named Raja) was brought to the Rescue Centre of Sambalpur Zoo from Nuapada. It killed 2 human beings & while it attacked the 3rd victim at Nuapada, the male was captured & brought to Sambalpur Zoo for treatment.
After 8 months of quarantine & treatment by zoo authorities, with permission of Central Zoo Authority – New Delhi, this male leopard – Raja was allowed for display with the female leopard Rani in Sambalpur Zoo during November 2024. Both were seen mating with each other during 2nd week of November 2024 soon after release in the common enclosure.
For monitoring the behaviour of both leopards and also for their safety, 24/7 CCTV monitoring, daily check-up by veterinarian and special team for observing the animals were made. Health condition of male leopard is good and is under observation said Hirakud Wildlife DFO Das.
