The Odisha government has made the decision to restore the residence of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore in Puri and transform it into a museum, as announced by a minister on Wednesday.
This decision was reached during a high-level review meeting chaired by Suryavanshi Suraj, the Minister of the Odia Language, Literature, and Culture Department.
The minister stated, “It has been decided to restore Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore’s residence ‘Pather Puri’ in Puri and convert it into a museum in his memory.”
He noted that the house, situated near the beach, was previously utilized as a boys’ hostel for students of Samanta Chandra Sekhar College before it was left abandoned.
Historian and coordinator of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage, Odisha chapter, Anil Dhir, mentioned that the land on Chakratirtha Road was allocated to Tagore in 1939 by the then Prime Minister of Odisha during British India. The Tagore family constructed a grand building on this land and later donated it to the state government for the purpose of promoting education, Dhir added.
