JSW Steel has commenced development of its greenfield integrated steel plant at Paradeep in Odisha with a planned production capacity of 13.2 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi graced the project commencement ceremony on Wednesday in presence of senior state government officials, and JSW Group Chairman Sajjan Jindal along with company executives.

The project, which will be developed in phases, involves an estimated investment of around ₹65,000 crore, making it one of the largest industrial investments in Odisha’s manufacturing sector.

Spread across nearly 2,950 acres, the integrated steel facility is strategically located along Odisha’s coastline at Paradip, offering port connectivity and access to raw material supply chains. The company stated that the plant has been planned with long-term expansion potential in line with future market demand and India’s growing steel consumption, driven by infrastructure development, urbanisation, and industrial expansion.

The project is expected to strengthen Odisha’s position as a major steel manufacturing hub in eastern India while contributing to industrial growth, infrastructure development, and employment generation in the region. Industry observers note that the investment also aligns with the Union Government’s Mission Purvodaya initiative aimed at accelerating industrialisation and manufacturing growth in eastern India.

Speaking at the event, JSW Group Chairman Sajjan Jindal said Odisha has emerged as a key industrial destination due to its infrastructure and policy support. JSW Steel Joint Managing Director and CEO Jayant Acharya highlighted the project’s coastal location and logistics advantages, which are expected to support operational efficiencies and improve access to domestic and international markets.

Once completed, the Paradip integrated steel plant will add significant capacity to India’s steel manufacturing sector and further consolidate Odisha’s role in the country’s industrial landscape.
