In a significant effort to decentralize its IT ecosystem, the Odisha government announced on Friday the identification of land for a proposed Rs 200 crore information technology hub in Sambalpur, representing a crucial advancement in establishing western Odisha as a new technology destination.

The proposed initiative will encompass the creation of a state-of-the-art IT park along with a dedicated IT tower, designed to attract prominent technology companies and establish a robust digital infrastructure outside the state capital. Officials have confirmed that the land selection process has been finalized, allowing the project to progress into the implementation phase.

This initiative is part of a larger strategy aimed at fostering IT growth beyond Bhubaneswar and promoting other cities such as Rourkela, Jharsuguda, and Berhampur as emerging centers for technology and innovation. By distributing investments across various regions, the government seeks to ensure equitable economic development and mitigate regional disparities.

Senior officials have suggested that Sambalpur possesses significant potential to draw both domestic and international companies once the necessary infrastructure is established. The project is anticipated to create considerable employment opportunities, particularly for local youth, while also enhancing related sectors through increased business activity.

Alongside infrastructure development, initiatives are being undertaken to bolster the talent pipeline in the region. Plans are in motion to set up a Centre of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence at Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology, which will concentrate on advanced research and skill enhancement. The government is also investigating collaborations with private enterprises to improve training and employment readiness.

The proposed IT hub embodies Odisha’s long-term vision of cultivating a robust and inclusive digital economy. If executed effectively, the project could position Sambalpur as a pivotal player in the state’s expanding technology landscape, unlocking new opportunities for investment, innovation, and job creation.
